Atul receives Honorary Degree

Twice Michelin starred chef, Atul Kochhar, has been honoured by Southampton Solent University.

The culinary star received the honorary degree of Doctor of Arts during a ceremony at Southampton's Guildhall on Thursday 4 November.

Atul created the world-renowned Benares Restaurant and is known by many for his numerous television appearances on shows like Masterchef Goes Large and Great British Menu.

He moved to London in 1994 after a successful cooking career at The Oberoi group of hotels in India. He became the first Indian chef to be awarded a Michelin star after he opened his first restaurant – Tamarind – in 2001.

After winning a second Michelin star in 2007, Atul opened Ananda in Dublin and has most recently established a fine dining restaurant – Vatika - at the renowned Wickham Vineyard.

Atul is a staunch supporter of children's charities – including Barnardos, Great Ormond Street Hospital and Save the Children. He is also an ambassador for Find Your Feet – a small charity helping to support some of the poorest families to build a better future. He is also an ambassador for the Princes' Trust.

He has visited some of the charity's work in India – as well as hosting fundraising dinners to help families throughout northern India out of hunger and poverty.

More than 2000 students are graduating with degrees and professional qualifications during 10 ceremonies at Southampton Guildhall from 1-5 November.
